To engage in a successful link exchange request campaign, it’s really not rocket science - just an observation of common courtesy and a recognition of the WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) motivators in regards to the people you are approaching.
For tips and suggestions on how you should approach other webmasters with a reciprocal link offer, read our guide to Internet Marketing etiquette.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is defined as (in my own words):
“The process of finding out the best keywords for a web site and by the use of optimizing the web site along with other off-page work making that web site attain a higher position in the search engine result pages (SERPs) for those selected words.”
Although the exact calculations used by the search engines are kept secret, there is lot of knowledge and observations in this field from thousands of webmasters worldwide.
It could be said to be a branch of online marketing. In general terms you can say that it means to make a web site more visible and make it look important in the eyes of search engines.
Not being familiar with SEO and not applying it compared to actually doing the right things can make a huge difference in terms of visitors to your web site.

2007 will be remembered by most webmasters and SEO’s as the year that Google publicly started the paid link crackdown.
2008 will be the year that this crackdown really starts to have an effect on the sites that consumers see when they perform searches on Google.
Google is getting better and better at detecting paid links. They have removed the ability for thousands of sites to pass PageRank and even reduced the ability of some sites to rank for their own names. 2008 will see every site that continues to publicly sell links receive harsh penalties in both search engine rankings and PR passing ability.
The knock on effect of this will be that sites who relied on paid links will gradually slip further and further down the rankings and be replaced by sites that spent 2007 carrying out aggressive viral marketing to build natural links. As these natural links start to age and gain trust and the top ranking sites lose links by the thousand we will see rankings change dramatically.
Most high quality sites will have been attracting links from mainstream media sites in 2007 so we won’t see many big names missing from the rankings, the knock on effect being that consumers will be remain happy with Google.
I also see the reliance on domain trust being turned back up a notch in 2008 as Google gets better at assigning trust to domains. Previously the fact trust was based on link age meant that newer sites struggled slightly and Google was forced to introduce the Query Deserves Freshness algorithm to improve results for topical searches. With paid links removed from the mix Google can assign trust based on links gained over the past year with a much greater confidence than ever before resulting in higher quality results and happier webmasters. A win win situation.
In 2007 we saw sites that regularly publish news and blog posts being granted almost instant spidering and extremely quick indexing. Trusted domains could get rankings for fresh keywords within an hour of publishing a new article. Google struggles to update it’s search results in real time and in 2008 I see the search results for breaking news queries almost mirroring the results seen in Google News.
The current reliance on domain trust is very good at removing spam but isn’t always very good at giving relevant results. Is Wikipedia always a useful result to have? Google thinks so, even if the article is useless. During 2008 I expect Google to increase the integration of toolbar and social bookmark data as well as link data on a page by basis to decide whether individual articles on sites like Wikipedia and mainstream news websites are worthy of good rankings. An article on the BBC would normally outrank a Daily Mail article thanks to internal links and domain trust but if the Daily Mail article has links from thousands of high quality blogs and 50,000 social bookmarks Google should be able to tell that this article is a more popular and useful result.

“Supplemental Hell” to webmasters, the issue has been lurking in places like Webmasterworld for over a year, but it was the major shake-up in late February (coinciding with the ongoing BigDaddy rollout) that finally led to all hell breaking loose in the webmaster community. You may be aware that Google has two indexes: the main index, which is the one you see when you search; and the Supplemental index, a graveyard where old, erroneous and obsolete pages are laid to rest (among others). Nobody’s disputing the need for a Supplemental index, it does indeed provide a worthy cause. But when you’re buried alive, it’s another story! Which is exactly what’s been happening: active, recent, and clean pages have been showing up in the Supplemental index. The true nature of the issue is unclear, nor has a common causing leading to it been determined.

Would you like to display an email address on a web page, but need a way to protect it from spammers? This tip is for you.
Displaying your email address on your web site is an important part of good customer service. However, the fear of spam robots harvesting email addresses prevents many webmasters from doing so.
If you would like to display your email address within your web pages and not worry about it being harvested, you can protect yourself. Instead of displaying the usual mailto:you@yourdomain.com, use the following code within your HTML:
<A HREF=”mailto:you@yourdomain.com”>Contact Us</A>
When clicked on, it will display your email address correctly.

- Black Hat SEO’s (aka SEO spamming) goal is to heavily leverage technology in order to get fast results. This means quickly getting their web site to the top of the Search Engines, which quickly catch on and ban them.
- White Hat SEO focuses upon building quality content. These web sites are built for people, not for the Search Engines, and the webmasters rely more upon content, combined with their marketing skills, to get them top results. These webmasters understand that this is going to take time and so they do not rush the results and thus run absolutely no risk of being banned by the Search Engines.
- Gray Hat SEO varies in its use of questionable tactics as well as the risks that they take. While some techniques may be frowned upon by the Search Engines, they are not necessarily against their rules. However, other techniques may be more risky and should be carefully considered before use.
So, which SEO hat should you wear? This depends upon your goals and objectives. However, you probably should not use black hat since it is so short-lived. Instead, strive to wear a white hat. Sometimes gray hat techniques also make sense but do not take too big of a risk if your web site is quite valuable.

Some web sites in the latest Google update were removed from top positions on Google that had been there for years. Webmasters were trying to figure out what had happened and couldn’t figure it out. After further analysis of the web sites and the web servers that they were on it was determined that their firewall was blocking access to the robots.txt file which in turn was causing their site to be removed from the index.
The firewall software by SonicWALL Inc. doesn’t allow access to the robots.txt file because it considers it a security violation. In actuality I can understand why it does this since one normally puts files or directories in it’s robots.txt file that surfers should not be allowed access to. If your host is running software by SonicWALL Inc. they need to allow outside access to the robots.txt file so the search engines can have access to it. All 3 major search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN need access to this file if it exists in order to spider a web site.
