Seo:The Sandbox

Monday, July 14th, 2008

It’s believed that Google has implemented a time penalty for new links and sites before fully marking the index, based on the presumption that 100,000-page websites can’t be created overnight. Certain web sites, or links to them, are “sandboxed” for a period of time before they are given full rank in the index. Speculation is that only a set of competitive keywords (the ones that are manipulated the most) are sandboxed. A drifting legend in the search engine world, the existence of the Sandbox has been debated, and is yet to be confirmed by Google.

SEO:Link Popularity - Search Engines Page Rank Technology

Monday, June 30th, 2008

What is Link Popularity?

Link popularity literally means the popularity of links to your site on other web sites. The more popular your site is - especially with well ranked sites, the higher will your site be ranked. For this reason we prefer to call link popularity as link quality. Most search engines decide the popularity of your individual site pages so you need to build up links to all your major pages. Thus page ranking will vary for your site pages and keywords.

Search Engine Optimization

To optimize your site for search engines, your pages should have relevant content with all related keywords appearing as valid reading matter. If your site doesn’t have quality content or you have just repeated your keywords without any sense, your page rank will be affected or worse you could be black listed by the search engines.

WordPress:Processor Limitations

Friday, June 27th, 2008

To serve high-traffic web sites, you will have to contend with the demand that high traffic puts on your server’s internal resources. Be sure that the general demand on your server is met by sufficient processor power and memory resources.

There can be more dependencies than what follows for publishing your WordPress site, however these are the ones that WordPress requires by default.

Are You Scaring Away Visitors to Your Website?

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

For most small businesses, the goal of having a web site is to attract customers, gather leads, and convert sales. But is that what YOUR web site is doing? When you get it right, web visitors have a valuable experience and clearly understand how your product or service fulfills their needs. Get it wrong and you could be sending web traffic and potential business right to your competitor’s door! Here are some common web site mistakes that can scare away visitors and hurt your bottom line:

- Too many choices – When you give your visitors too many options, it can become overwhelming, making them less likely to make any decision at all. All options are not equally important, so be careful to present your information in an organized, logical way that is easy to understand.

Editor’s Note – Please read this article I had written on another website.

- Non-relevant web site content – Be sure that the content on your site is focused on delivering your main marketing message. You are the expert on your business, so you already know what information customers need in order to make a decision. Extra information that doesn’t promote or support your message doesn’t belong on your web site.

- Unprofessional web design – The way your web site looks and functions speaks volumes about your business, even if it is unintentional. If your web site has poor layout, broken or missing links, outdated information, or looks unprofessional, your visitors will have a negative impression of your company, regardless of how great your business may be.

- Red flags – Most web users today have a healthy skepticism when they visit web sites, so make sure you show them immediately that your company is legitimate. Provide detailed contact information that includes your physical mailing address, phone number, contact names, and email addresses so visitors know your business can be trusted.

- Asking for too much information – When visitors want to make a purchase, sign up for your mailing list, or request information from your web site, what kind of a form will they be faced with? Make sure you ask only for the information that you absolutely need, and don’t try to gather too much information at once. Instead, keep the form short and simple, and then follow up later to gather any additional customer information that you may need.

Link Popularity

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Link building is a targeted way of building a web sites link popularity. You may ask why is link popularity important and why does my site need it? Good Question. And the answer is because search engines like Google put a lot of emphasis on inbound links that come into a web site. The anchor text that is used to point to that inbound web page should also match the optimized phrase for the page, but that’s a different topic. Link building will over time get you to place better with the major search engines.

You can start your link building efforts by doing a search for your desired keyword or keyphrase on Google for example and contact some of the top results to see if they would be interested in exchanging links with your site. Have the code that you would like them to use to point to your web site ready to give to them when you contact them. Make sure that you have an area of your web site that is devoted to posting your relevant link exchanges. That’s right you want to exchange links with sites that have relevancy to what they will be pointing to.

Building inbound links to your web site is very powerful and if done correctly it will:

Increase web traffic to your site

Save you advertising money and time

Make you more of an authority on your subject matter

Increase your visibility in the search engines

Ah-Ha There is a Google Sandbox!

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

As if we didn’t already know that the secrets of Google were being exposed, this week Google applied for a patent that pretty much details some of their algorithmic patterns. There is a mountain range of ranking analysis techniques. One would assume that if they are important enough to patent then they must be part of their algorithm.

I’m just glad to see that the theory that there is a sandbox, or a holding bin if you will of web sites that are held for a period of time is true. After launching numerous web sites and pulling our hairs out wondering why our listings were taking so long this is much welcomed news!

What Does Google Look for in Links?

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

Reading Google’s patent filing it appears that they rely heavily on web site links and anchor text in their algorithm. The items below were some of the items the patent said they look for:

* Tracking of the appearance and disappearance of links over specific times
* Tracking of growth rates of links in other web sits
* Tracking of anchor text and dates established and how they change over time
* Older established links get a higher rating than newer less established links
* Fresh pages might be considered more important
* New web sites don’t normally have a lot of links, but if they come from established web sites they will be tolerated
* Older pages that don’t change very often but have incoming links growth over time can be considered fresh
* Burst link growth may indicate spamming of the index
* Anchor text should vary and not be the same from all incoming sources
* Web site link growth should be consistent and slow

Your Firewall Could Get You Delisted

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Some web sites in the latest Google update were removed from top positions on Google that had been there for years. Webmasters were trying to figure out what had happened and couldn’t figure it out. After further analysis of the web sites and the web servers that they were on it was determined that their firewall was blocking access to the robots.txt file which in turn was causing their site to be removed from the index.

The firewall software by SonicWALL Inc. doesn’t allow access to the robots.txt file because it considers it a security violation. In actuality I can understand why it does this since one normally puts files or directories in it’s robots.txt file that surfers should not be allowed access to. If your host is running software by SonicWALL Inc. they need to allow outside access to the robots.txt file so the search engines can have access to it. All 3 major search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN need access to this file if it exists in order to spider a web site.
