Search engine optimization-Buy Links

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Many professional web masters have a budget to purchase links from other highly ranked and and relevant sites. I won’t go into this too much here but you might like to read more about it in my recent post On Buying Text Links. update: I’d encourage anyone wanting to buy links to think very carefully about this. Google have been cracking down on sites that use this practice. They can’t catch everyone but some have been caught and seem to have been penalized for doing it.

Search engine optimization-Notify Relevant Bloggers of your content

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Whilst I don’t advocate spamming other bloggers and asking for links - I would recommend that if you write a quality post on a topic that you know will interest another blogger that it might be worth shooting them a short and polite email letting them know of your post. Don’t be offended if they don’t link up, but you might just find that they do and that in addition to the direct traffic that the link generates that it helps build your own page rank in the search engines

Search engine Optimization-Some last remarks

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Google simply puts a 30 days block upon sites that use trivial keyword tricks (hidden text/div or text in the same color as a background), so don’t bother trying this kind of stuff. Detecting and catching a robot with javascript or IP cloacing or using linkfarms to boost your Pagerank are considered even more illegal. They could get you put out of the ranking for good.

Just remember that a robot will be optimized over and over to be able to judge webpages the way a human does. In the end, if you make sure your site is clean and accessible and your content is good and relevant, websurfers will find you and bytes will flow.

Of course this article only covers the rough basics of search engine optimization. If you feel like I have missed out on something, or you’ve got an excellent hint to share, please feel free to post them in the forum! The diagnostics guide from GoogleRankings.com is a great resource for more information (there’s a list of issues at the left side).

Seo-Get your keywords

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Your website is not ranked as a whole. Keywords are used to determine the relevancy of your website for particular subjects. So, before buiding your site, make sure you have a relevant set of keywords. Check competing websites for keywords / search terms and use the good ones for yourself.

Search Engine Optimization Ethics

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Ethical SEO should be a technique that:

1. Does more good than harm.
2. Remembers the dignity and rights of everyone who is involved.
3. Treats everyone who is involved fairly.
4. Looks out for the overall benefit of everyone who is involved.
5. Enhances the participant’s experience.

With this in mind, it is also important to clearly understand what is expected of both the Search Engines, the users and both the web page and its owner alike.

Some of the things that are expected of Search Engines include:

1. Return the most relevant resources based upon the keywords that are entered by the user.
2. Index and maintain an index of all of the different web pages that are online today.
3. Be honest about the links that they sponsor on their search results pages.

Some of the things that are expected of web pages and site owners include:

1. Provide relevant content for the user’s search.
2. Remain honest whenever changing the content or keywords.
3. Adhere to the Terms and Conditions that various Search Engines have laid out.

Some of the things that are expected of the users include:

1. They should only use those search engines that return relevant results on their results pages to do their web searching.
2. They should be at least somewhat aware of what is taking place on the Internet.
3. They should be fair whenever a case of minor mismatches in search results takes place. This should always be their attitude unless these mismatches appear to be done with malicious intent.

Off Site SEO Techniques

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Off site SEO techniques are as the name suggests factors from outside the site itself (ie from other sites) that impact the blog’s ranking in search engines. Many of these factors are outside the blogger’s control - however they are useful to know. The most obvious and probably most powerful offsite factor are Inbound Links (something I’ve already referred to above).

It is generally agreed that the links that point to a website are one of the most powerful way of climbing Search Engines results pages (in fact many argue it is THE most important factor). - To put it most simply - every link to your site is seen by the search engines as being a vote of confidence in your site.

Ideally Speaking - The best inbound links have three main qualities to them:

1. they are from higher ranked sites than your own
2. they are relevant to the topic you are writing about
3. they link to you using relevant keywords to your page
