Website Navigation Tips

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

While designing the navigation for your site keep the following points in mind:

* Organized Links
Make sure your links are well organized according to the order of importance. Visitors should be easily able to find what they are looking for under different categories.
E.g. All our main links are found on the top i.e. our services, products,portfolio, resources etc.Other interesting links are found on the right of the page. These are common and consistent throughout the site.
Finally if the web page belongs to a guide E.g web design guide you will find the related links below the right menu and also at the bottom of the page.

Note: Related links are very important as visitors coming to a particular page will probably be interested in more information you have under the same topic.

* Clear and Prominent
Once you have decided on your navigation links, you need to think of the best place to put them. Navigation should be clear and consistent. Try to design your navigation on the top or on the left as these are the first places our eyes go to. Also locate the primary links high enough on the page so that they are visible without scrolling. Navigation images should be seamlessly integrated into the site design. Avoid putting navigation links at the bottom of the page as visitors will need to scroll right down to see the links. If you like you could put the important links at the top AND bottom of the page just to make sure your visitors don’t miss the link.

* Consistent
Navigation should be clear and consistent. The important links of your website should be on every page, in the same location, and in the same sequence. Don’t confuse your visitors by putting your navigation links in different places in different pages.

* Easy to understand
Make your links easy to understand and to the point. Usually you won’t have enough place to have long links so make use of the space wisely. Visitors need to know where they will go on clicking on a particular link, so make sure your links are understandable or nobody is going to click on your links, which will defeat the purpose of designing a good navigation system.

* DHTML Menus
If you have a large number of links under categories and sub-categories you could use navigation menus to organize your links. There are many cut ‘n’ paste scripts available on the Net that you could use to create great navigation systems. A favorite resource center is SimplyTheBest.net, you’ll find tons of useful navigation menus that are very easy to install on your site.

Search engine optimization-Swap Links

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Similarly many bloggers swap links with other bloggers. Sometimes this happens pretty naturally (you see someone linking to you so you link back) but in many cases the links are strategic ones and formally arranged between site owners. I get daily requests for such reciprocal links (I rarely act on them). Whilst there is some benefit in such link swapping I would again advise caution here as many SEO experts believe that the search engines have methods for tracking such strategies and devaluing the links. Some try to get around this by doing indirect or triangulated links. ie instead of site A and B doign a direct swap they involve other sites. So A links to C in exchange for D (also owned by C) linking to B (also owned by A) - makes your head hurt doesn’t it!?! There are also a variety of systems around that say they’ll take care of such interlinking for you - I know many who use Digital Point’s Free C0-Op Advertising system. Personally I tend to avoid such schemes and have a policy of linking to sites I think are valuable to my readers. If they link back then so be it.

Search engine optimization-Buy Links

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Many professional web masters have a budget to purchase links from other highly ranked and and relevant sites. I won’t go into this too much here but you might like to read more about it in my recent post On Buying Text Links. update: I’d encourage anyone wanting to buy links to think very carefully about this. Google have been cracking down on sites that use this practice. They can’t catch everyone but some have been caught and seem to have been penalized for doing it.

Search Engine Optimization-Attract links to your website

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The number and quality of links pointing to your website are terribly important to your Google rank. There are a number of different strategies and techniques to pursue at this stage. Some of our highest-ranking examples on this list have made a habit of including a small credit link back to their site on the websites they design. Those links add up quickly, especially if they are included on a page footer that appears on each page in a client’s website.

We know that practically but what about ethically? And how does Google decide which inbound links are more important than others?

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The first question is, is it ethical and that same question could be posed to professional journals in their system of citing authors and experts. The notion of citation and reference is what Google’s Page Rank is based on.

Let’s talk ethics for a moment. Are inbound links the best way to determine search engine accuracy?

Well it’s Google’s way and they have 60% of the market share.

US GOVERNMENT SEARCH-GOOGLE

<usgov.google.com>: I use FirstGov.gov as a portal for all things dealing with the US government, and FedStats.gov. Google now offers a site with links to government news and search functions.

Free One Way Backlinks

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Nowadays I think pretty much every webmaster and web site owner knows that if you can get more quality backlinks to your web site, it can help you improve your rankings in search engines (especially Google). The higher your rank in search engines, that is to say the nearer the top of the search results you are for searches on relevant keywords, the more traffic that your web site will get. And, the more traffic that your web site gets, the more money you can make, whether it is from selling your own products and services, from commissions on sales of affiliate products, or from advertising programs such as Google AdSense.

One obvious way to get links to your site is to exchange links with other sites. As much as anything is, this might be considered a traditional form of web site promotion. Exchanging links is however time consuming, since you need to spend time finding sites to swap links with, and you must then set up the links and monitor them on an ongoing basis. Another disadvantage of each exchanging links, is of course that you are not just links coming into your site, you also linking to, and sending traffic to, other sites.

If you want other sites to link to you, without having to link back, there are several options:

1. You may be able to find some directories that accept free submissions. Of course, the number of good quality directories that accept free submissions is usually quite limited - as too many free submissions will tend to result in a good quality directory quickly turning to junk.

2. You may be able to pay other sites to link to you. Of course this can cost quite a bit of money, and you may also find that search engines take a dim view of such activity - perhaps penalizing or evening banning your site from their listings!

3. You can provide interesting content on your site (known as “link bait”) and simply hope that people choose to link to it. Of course, you may get lucky, but this approach is hit and miss to put it mildly.

4. You can write articles and submit them to article directories. This is actually the best option, since writing a few hundred words about a topic which relates to your business and which you already know something about, is not too difficult. When you submit your article to a directory, you will be allowed to include a “resource box” or “bio” section, which may contain a backlink to your own web site. Additionally, since there are hundreds of article directories, even writing a single article can result in hundreds of backlinks. Of course, the difficulty is that submitting to hundreds of directories can take a lot of effort if done manually - so I’d suggest you invest in some article submitter software, and automate the process. Don’t expect massive results from just one article, but if you make writing and submitting articles a regular activity, over time, it can lead to some impressive results.

Creating Glowing Web Page HTML Links

Monday, July 14th, 2008

You can create glowing hyperlinks within your web page.

This special effect will make your links appear to be glowing. Place the following code within your HTML where you would like your link to appear.

Glowing Text Link Example

<SPAN STYLE=”position:relative; width:200; height:25; filter:glow(color=#3A9DFA,strength=2)”>
<A href=”http://www.domain.com”>Glowing Text Link Example</A></SPAN>

Change the text indicated in “red” for customization.

Creating glowing web page links within your sales web pages is a great way to draw attention to your links by highlighting them. However, use this HTML code carefully, as you don’t want to confuse your visitors.

Highlighting HTML Web Page Links

Monday, July 14th, 2008

You can display your HTML web page  links in the color of your choice by adding the STYLE attribute to your HTML code.

Copy and paste the following code into the HTML portion of your web page where you would like the link to appear:

<A HREF=”http://www.yourdomain.com/” STYLE=”background:yellow; color:black” TARGET=”blank”>http://www.yourdomain.com/</A>

You can change the colors to whatever you’d like, but keep in mind, the text must be visible through the background color.
