Search engine optimization-The History Of Your Web Pages

Friday, July 18th, 2008

The history of your website and in fact, the individual pages within it are playing an increasingly important role in your site’s ability to rank well. The longer your site has been online the better your chances of ranking highly. Further, the longer a specific internal page has been live the better it will rank for additional phrases.

What this means to you is that you will have to take into account the length of time your domain has been around when you set your expectations regarding which phrases you should be ranking for. In the beginning of a promotion you will not want to target an intensely competitive phrase with hopes of attaining it on Google; rather you will want to select less competitive secondary phrases that contain the primary phrase (”seo services” vs. “guaranteed seo services” for example) and optimize for that. What you will accomplish is rankings on Google for at least a relevant phrase while at the same time building links with relevancy for your primary phrase which you will rank well for once your website has gained history.

The less competitive the phrase, the more weight the other factors will have on your ability to rank highly. History is only one factor among many. For highly competitive phrases where you are competing with sites that have history and have also addressed the other factors noted below you will find it extremely difficult to outrank them, however for less competitive phrases the other factors will hold more weight in that the other sites will likely not be optimized as strongly for them and thus, your site stands a much better chance of beating them out.

Search engine optimization-Choose a phrase that is popular, but not too popular

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

When trying to decide on a keyword phrase, you want to find one that is popular but not extremely popular. This may seem counter-intuitive, but the reality is that extremely popular keywords are very desirable and so very competitive. It’s better to try to optimize for keywords that you can rank higher. You’ll get more pageviews from a less popular keyword when you’re on the first or second page of the search engines, than from a super popular keyword that you only make it to page 50 of search engines.

Seo:The Sandbox

Monday, July 14th, 2008

It’s believed that Google has implemented a time penalty for new links and sites before fully marking the index, based on the presumption that 100,000-page websites can’t be created overnight. Certain web sites, or links to them, are “sandboxed” for a period of time before they are given full rank in the index. Speculation is that only a set of competitive keywords (the ones that are manipulated the most) are sandboxed. A drifting legend in the search engine world, the existence of the Sandbox has been debated, and is yet to be confirmed by Google.

Inbound Links are VERY Important

Friday, June 20th, 2008

It’s a well known fact that the on page contents of a web page are important to search engines. One thing that is most often over-looked however is building inbound link campaigns. According to Google, Yahoo and MSN inbound links are the single most important factor to a web sites success in ranking well and staying there.

When you optimize your web site pages you want to optimize them for keywords or keyphrases that are relevant to your industry. By doing this you are telling the search engines what keywords or keyphrases are relevant to your business.

If the keywords or keyphrases that you use are not that competitive odds are that you will get good rankings for these keywords or keyphrases. If your keywords or keyphrases are more sought after then in order to rank well you need to have inbound links coming into your web site from other web sites with those keywords or keyphrases.

The web site with the best inbound links will get the best rankings.

Related Keywords and Yahoo! Search Assist

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Though Yahoo! Search Assist was launched in Yahoo! Search US back in October, Yahoo’s announcement (just a few hours ago!) of search assist being rolled out in other countries made me remember the importance of choosing your keywords.

One of the biggest mistakes you can commit in SEO is choosing only primary keywords that are too highly competitive and not optimising for other keywords that expound on those primary keywords. The emergence of Yahoo! search assist makes related keywords even more important. How so?

Search assist, as the term suggests, assists or aids users in narrowing down the search immediately by suggesting other related keywords as a search term is being typed in the search box. For example as I typed in Disneyland the following suggestions emerged, with the suggestions evolving as more letters were typed in.

* dis - disney, disney channel, dish network, discount tire, discover card
* disn - disney, disney channel, disney world, disneyland, playhouse disney
* disney - disney channel, playhouse disney, disney world, disneyland, disney channel games
* disneyl - disneyland, disneyland california, disneyland hotel california, hong kong disneyland, disneyland tickets
