Shopping Carts

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Shopping carts are scripts that can be installed in your hosting account. They can automate the whole eCommerce experience by organizing your products into categories, creating pages that describe categories as well as individual items, allow you to keep track of returning clients, suggest other items for the customer to buy before they check out, and allow them rate the products they have bought.

Shopping carts can provide a more satisfying shopping experience while providing a structure for your online business.  Many hosting packages include free shopping cart scripts such as Miva, Agora, osCommerce, and Zen. When choosing an eCommerce package, make sure it supports your preferred method of payment gateway. For example, if you already have a merchant account with your local bank, use that as your starting point for choosing a shopping cart which supports that particular payment method.

Build A Website - 5 Factors You Must Consider

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

I have seen and heard crazy things…ah! But how to build a website! In my endeavor and quest for success I have heard people ask weird questions and I have seen those professing to be internet gurus give astounding answers.

I know of a fellow who posted a question on yahoo answers. This particular question kept me staring at my monitor screen lost of words. This fellow had bought a domain name and registered it with one of the leading domain name registrar. His question was simple yet to those familiar with the art of online business, the question leaves a lot to be desired.

My friend was seeking advice on what to do with his domain name. He had no plans or ideas on what to do with it! Think of lack of planning and we don’ t need to go further than this example.

To avoid being on the same predicament, here are 5 factors to consider as you ponder on your next move. Before you build a website, think about the following:
Type of web site.

Identify the type of web site you will be building. Are you going to build a website whose primary purpose is to sell hard good or e-goods? Would your site be composed of affiliate links or are you going to sell your own service or product? Is your web site going to be primarily informative in nature with google ad sense and other form of advertisement or is it going to be purely visual with little or no content.

Identifying the type of web site you are going to create will make the next step easy to identify.
Niche based.

Gone are the days when all a web master needed to do was to stuff their web site with links leading to all type of product and services. In the current internet world you can not succeed in building a web site designed in the form of a shopping mall with all kinds of goods and services.

The internet is increasingly and exponentially becoming a specialized super highway. Only those web sites that are able to distinguish them selves as authorities in a given area are poised to reap the benefits of online business.

Start out by identifying a profitable niche that you will enjoy writing about, identify an area that you already have experience on, have passion or will be comfortable learning about.

Only build a website in an area or niche that you believe in.
Research you market.

It’s not just enough to develop and build a website based on your strength and weakness. Care should be taken to do a little bit more research about the potential and profitability of that given field.

There are great tools out there on the net that would enable you to come up with a profitable niche, those tools will also enhance your research by shading light as to the exact phrases that your potential visitors would under normal circumstances type into the search engines in their quest for information.
Domain name and hosting.

Care should be taken while choosing the domain name and hosting company for your online business. A search in any of the leading search engines for the phrase “how to choose a domain name” or “web hosting” would return tones of articles that have been written advising us on the do and don’ t do as far as choosing a domain name or host provider is concerned.

Quality Content.

Have you ever typed the exact phrase of a given keyword while searching for information on any of the leading search engines only to end up frustrated with the displayed results after trying several times? Search engines and human traffic thirst for information, great quality information.

One sure ways to win the search engines wars and in the process please your targeted customers is to create quality content. A site owner who remains focused and persistent in doing just start will in the long run reap the benefit of having their pages rank up high if not at the top of the search query results.

Some Google “Tricks” You Were NEVER Told About and Some You Probably Already Know.

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

1 Searching in a Range

So, you are searching for Sexy Singles between the age of 18 and 25 or looking for a cake which weighs between 100 and 200 pounds? Google has a way which lets you specify the range you want to find results in.

The trick is to use “..”double dotsbetween the range. For example, Cake 100..200 pound or Sexy Singles 18..25 years.

I don’t really want to give the exact query I used to test this trickI am sure some of you are reading it from workbut don’t forget to specify the unit. Google is smart but not “THAT” smart.

2 Synonym Search

Want to search for the term and its synonyms at the same time? Google makes it easier for you than you having to search every synonym individually.

The easy way that Google offers is just to add the “~” sign in front of your search term and voila!

For example if you want to search for funny pictures and its synonyms then just search for ~funny ~pictures and Google will return the results for funny picture, funny image, stupid pictures, comic image etc. Get the idea?

3 Remove Some Words

If you want to omit certain words from the search results then you can simply add the “-” sign in front of your search term.

Lets say that you search for Clinton on Google, you will get results for Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton and even Monika Lewinsky. But if you don’t want search results for Hillary, just add - Hillary and you will see results only for Bill Clinton and Monika Lewinsky.

4 Let Google Define It

You can add “define:” in front of a word and Google will find its definitions from around the Internet. Just try searching for define:css and you will see what I mean.

5 Spelling Uncertainty? Let Google Handle it.

If you are uncertain about the spelling of a word you are searching just add the “?” sign in front of it and it will show you results for all possible word combinations. If you search sun?day, you will get results about sun earth day and the word sun-day too!

6 Get Stock Updates.

Add “stocks:” operator in front of the STOCK TICKER and Google will link to a page showing stock information for those symbols. For instance, [stocks: goog yhoo] will show information about Google and Yahoo.

Ah-Ha There is a Google Sandbox!

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

As if we didn’t already know that the secrets of Google were being exposed, this week Google applied for a patent that pretty much details some of their algorithmic patterns. There is a mountain range of ranking analysis techniques. One would assume that if they are important enough to patent then they must be part of their algorithm.

I’m just glad to see that the theory that there is a sandbox, or a holding bin if you will of web sites that are held for a period of time is true. After launching numerous web sites and pulling our hairs out wondering why our listings were taking so long this is much welcomed news!

Participate at Related Forums & Blogs

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

Whatever industry or niche you’re in, there are bloggers, forums and an online community that’s already active. Depending on the specificity of your focus, you may need to think one or two levels broader than your own content to find a large community, but with the size of the participatory web today, even the highly specialized content areas receive attention. A great way to find out who these people are is to use Technorati to conduct searches, then sort by number of links (authority). Del.icio.us tags are also very useful in this process, as are straight searches at the engines (Ask.com’s blog search in particular is of very good quality).
